What is a good typing speed?
A typing test measures how fast and how accurately you type, and the result is shown in words per minute (WPM). The average adult types about 40 WPM. Where you land on the scale below tells you how comfortable you will be with office work, data entry or exam typing.
| Level | WPM | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 0 - 19 | Mostly looking at the keys. Accuracy practice pays off fastest here. |
| Average | 20 - 39 | Fine for chat, email and school work. |
| Good | 40 - 59 | Comfortable for everyday office work. |
| Fast | 60 - 79 | Professional level for data entry and admin roles. |
| Pro | 80+ | Top tier, common among transcriptionists and competitive typists. |
How WPM and accuracy are calculated
- WPM (net speed): correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Every five characters, spaces included, count as one word.
- Raw WPM: all typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes, mistakes included.
- Accuracy: keystrokes that were correct ÷ total keystrokes. Fixing a mistake with backspace still counts it as an error, which keeps the score honest.
- CPM: characters per minute, which is WPM × 5.
1 minute, 3 minute or 5 minute typing test?
| Test | Best for |
|---|---|
| 30 second test | A quick warm-up or a fast check between tasks. |
| 1 minute test | The standard benchmark most people quote as their WPM. |
| 2 and 3 minute tests | A steadier score with less luck involved. |
| 5 minute test | Endurance. Shows whether your speed and accuracy hold up. |
How to type faster: 6 proven tips
- Learn touch typing. Rest your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and let each finger own its keys.
- Look at the screen, not the keys. Cover your hands if you need to.
- Accuracy first. Slow down until errors almost disappear, then build speed.
- Practise daily. Fifteen focused minutes beat one long weekly session.
- Fix your posture. Sit upright with elbows at desk height and wrists relaxed.
- Train the number row. Use the Numbers text type to get comfortable with digits.
Typing tests for jobs and exams
Clerical, data-entry and government recruitment tests often need a minimum typing speed, so a regular WPM check is a smart part of your preparation. Use the Custom text type to paste practice passages, and always confirm the required speed in the official notification. Need to count or clean up text? Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Most adults type around 40 words per minute (WPM). 50 to 60 WPM is good for everyday office work, 70 WPM and above is fast, and 100 WPM or more is elite. Aim for at least 95% accuracy, because a fast score with many errors does not help you.
How do I check my WPM with this typing test?
Choose a test length, click the text box and start typing. The timer starts on your first keystroke. When time is up you see your net WPM, accuracy, raw speed and errors.
How is WPM calculated?
One word is counted as five characters, including spaces. Your WPM is the number of correct characters divided by five, divided by the minutes you typed. For example, 200 correct characters in one minute is 40 WPM.
What is the difference between WPM and CPM?
WPM counts words per minute (five characters each). CPM counts characters per minute. Multiply WPM by five to get CPM, so 40 WPM equals about 200 CPM.
Is this typing test really free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up or download, and runs in your browser on desktop, laptop and tablet.
Which test length should I choose?
Use 30 seconds for a quick check, 1 minute as the standard benchmark, and 3 to 5 minutes for a steadier score that shows how well you keep your speed as you tire.
Does the typing test work on a phone?
It loads on a phone, but touchscreen typing is not comparable with keyboard typing. For a reliable WPM, use a physical or Bluetooth keyboard, or connect a USB keyboard to your phone with an OTG cable.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Practise a little every day, keep your eyes on the screen, use all ten fingers from the home row and slow down until your accuracy passes 95%. Speed follows accuracy. Retake the test weekly to track progress.
Do jobs and exams ask for a minimum typing speed?
Many clerical, data-entry and government recruitment tests set a minimum, often between 25 and 40 WPM in the required language. Check the official notification for the exact speed, test length and accuracy rule.
Is my typing data stored or shared?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser and your text is never uploaded. Only your personal best for each test length is saved on your own device, and you can clear it by clearing site data.
