Nobel Prize 2022: Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K.Barry Sharpless win in Chemistry

Three scientists won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their breakthroughs in molecular structure and bonding. Among them are America’s Carolyn R. Bertozzi and Kay Barry Sharpless as well as Denmark’s Morten Meldahl. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the names of these three people on Wednesday.

The total prize-value of one crore Swedish kroner (about 1 million dollars or 7.5 crore taka) will be shared equally among the three scientists. Among them, Sharpless received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001. He is the second scientist in the history of Nobel to receive this honor twice in chemistry. The Nobel committee believes that their research on ‘click chemistry’ can give a new dimension to the pharmaceutical industry in the future.

From 1901 till today in the history of Nobel Prize in Chemistry, a total of 116 people have received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Among them are 7 women scientists. 2020 was the first time in the history of the Nobel Prize that two women were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Professor Emmanuel Sharpenter of Germany’s Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens and Professor Jennifer A Doudna of the University of California, Berkeley jointly received the Nobel Prize that year.

Madame Curie won the Nobel Prize twice in two separate subjects (physics and chemistry) in 1903 and 1911, just eight years apart. British scientist Frederick Sanger holds the record for receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry twice in 1958 and 1980. Sharpless broke that record on Wednesday.
