আজ থেকে প্রায় ৫০০ বছর আগে ইংল্যান্ডে ‘স্টিক অ্যান্ড বল’ নামক খেলা থেকেই ক্রিকেট খেলার উদ্ভব ঘটেছে।
1) প্রাক্-শিল্পবিপ্লব পর্বের এই খেলায় হাতে তৈরি কাঠের ব্যাট ও স্ট্যাম্প বেল, বল ব্যবহার করা হত এবং আঠারো শতকে এই খেলা একটি পরিণত খেলার চরিত্র লাভ করে।
2) ১৭৪৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দে প্রথম ক্রিকেটের নিয়মবিধি রচিত হয়। ১৭৬০-এর দশকে ইংল্যান্ডের হাম্বেলডন-এ প্রথম ক্রিকেট ক্লাব গঠিত হয় এবং ১৭৮০-র দশকে শুরু হল ‘ক্রিকেটের অভিভাবক’ রূপে পরিচিত মেলবোর্ন ক্রিকেট ক্লাব (MCC)।
